The "BARRIO BUMP Mix" offers a more percussive dancefloor swing to the same stories, but in a "Live at the BBQ" fashion!

TRACK LIST:
1- A New York Minute (Summer of 77 Mix) feat The Real Live Show, Sadat X, iLLspokinN, Rabbi Darkside

2- A New York Minute (Barrio Bump Mix) feat The Real Live Show, Sadat X, iLLspokinN, Rabbi Darkside

3- A New York Minute (Barrio Bump Instrumental Mix)

www.nickodemus.com
http://www.wonderwheelrecordings.com

Splore Festival with Nickodemus

Splore hailed a huge success

Last weekend's Splore festival at Tapapakanga Regional Park, south of Auckland. There were a few things we wish were slightly more fine tuned, but every time is a learning experience and really it was a magnificent weekend.
"We've had phenomenal feedback from many happy campers. There's a plethora of photos and positive feedback on our Facebook page," she told NZPA.

Headline acts Lupe Fiasco (US) and Britons Basement Jaxx took to the stage this year, backed up by international and New Zealand talent.

People could also check out a Splore art trail presenting works from a diverse cross section of contemporary New Zealand architects, film-makers, painters, writers, video artists, sculptors, photographers, spatial designers and performance artists.

Wright says it was difficult to pick a single highlight over the weekend.

"Nickodemus' last set on the main stage on Sunday was beautiful. I also loved Living Lounge on Saturday night and everyone dressing up, the weather, The Rum Shack, Doc Westie and so much more," she said.
Splore is held every two years, with entertainment split into multi-zones with electro dancebeats, dub, soul and reggae, cabaret, theatre and special zones for teens and children.
Splore has evolved as it grew from humble origins in 1998.

Wright took the event to the next level in 2004, with the backing and business expertise of former magazine publisher and Splore enthusiast John Minty. The Splore Trust was also set up as a creative think tank.
Wright, 42, has a background in event management as well as personal experience of festivals overseas. She spent most of the '90s working as a DJ at outdoor festivals in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.
Since Splore began, people have met their husbands or wives at the festival, and babies have been conceived at the event, she says.

For the first time this year, a wedding celebrant was on hand for couples who wanted to get hitched, and three couples reportedly tied the knot.

Original Article on class="headline">Nickodemus

By José Dávila

At times, WMC can feel a little heavy on the Euro beats, but for those of you looking for jazzier, more Afro-centric flavors, there's always a cool, soul-shaking DJ to fit your bill. Representing Brooklyn, DJ Nickodemus incorporates the outer edges of Brazilian and Caribbean music into a laid-back house vibe. Even better, the always-eclectic spinner also shows a considerable panache for mixing underground hip-hop with jazz, creating a just-right musical atmosphere to chill out with your people. Nickodemus also travels the world recording live musicians, which he duly incorporates into his mix. This multimedia technique gives his music a rich, distinctive sound, miles ahead of the laptop-only crowd.

Known for his Turntables on the Hudson parties in New York, he excels at creating loved-up soundscapes that will surely provide a welcome reprieve from the techno-electro madness for which WMC is famous. Check him out at any number of gigs this Conference, where he's sure to bust out his fantastic "Desert Dancer," a track featuring soothing Middle Eastern tablas accompanied by an exotic and hypnotizing female chant.

Original Press Article on Miami New Times

Urb Magazine Review: "Sun People Remixed"

Nickodemus: " Sun People Remixed"

Released by ESL Music

February brings with it the gloom of winter. The holidays have come and gone, the snow is no longer entertaining or beautiful, an oversized rodent becomes a momentary oracle that will hopefully tell of an end to a season that has overstayed its brief welcome. A musical relief from the doldrums comes from Brooklyn DJ Nickodemus whose cover artwork alone looks as though it could combat a tough case of S.A.D. Nickodemus didn't skimp when it came to remixing the songs from his second album, Sun People. By incorporating artists from around the globe Nickodemus has added legitimate world music names to an album with a world music vibe.

The reworks come from a laundry list of DJs who probably aren’t household names to many, but musical skills obviously mean much more to Nickodemus than namesake. Kush Arora, Christian Prommer, Adham Shaikh, J-Boogie, Tal M Klein and The Spy From Cairo are some of the artists he has recruited to help make an already vibrant and eclectic original release stronger.

The ever-upbeat disc is an endless stream of optimistic and sunny beats, with each track it’s own sampling of cultures that should clash but instead meld together well. The second track, "Brookarest (The Pimps of Joytime Remix)," begins with a French Quarter jazz feel before meandering into what could be best described as a snake charmers lullaby. Pablo Sanchez's remix of "Sun Children (featuring The Real Live Show)" drops the listener into a urban center, a sweltering summer street corner where old school harmonizing has been traded for hip-hop.

Every song holds the same type of complexity. The soundtrack perhaps to a day spent wandering through the world’s most diverse marketplace, where each turn finds you facing a new cultural gathering or maybe it’s much closer to home; just a reflection of Nickodemus’ New York City backdrop, a place of equal diversity and the rhythms to match.

Original Review by Urb Magazine

"Sun People Remixed" Review on Mog.com

from the press release:

Although summer's long gone Brooklyn's DJ Nickodemus is ready to heat up your soundsystem with Sun People Remixed. As the title suggests, this release brings together some of the world's finest and most eclectic remixers for brand new interpretations of original tracks culled from Nickodemus' critically acclaimed sophomore artist album Sun People.

Earthrise Soundsystem's take on the title track is a tribal moment; packed with West African chants, while The Spy From Cairo brings a deep island reggae sound to "Just Move Feat Kwasi" Next, The Pimps of Joytime take Brooklyn & Bucharest on down to the Big Easy with that New Orleans funk groove and both Red Astaire and Tal M Klein lay down a thick layer of funky bass on their interpretations of "Sun Children" and "N'Dini," respectively.

J Boogie brings a wonderfully warm electronic vibe to the soothing Middle Eastern vocal on ""Didibina" while Swedish producer HIRD (Fever Ray, Little Dragon) brings out a treasure trove of percussion on "La Lluvia." The warehouse doors fly open with techno on Christian Prommer's driving and beautiful remix of "The Love Feeling;" a proper warm up for Kush Arora's bone rattling 2 step crusher on "2 Sips & Magic." A comedown is necessary after that scorcher and Adham Shaikh offers the perfect R&R through his downtempo take on "WEriseWEfallWerise" Day turns to evening and the sun sets on this CD with Pablo Sanchez's smooth Hip-Hop flavored take on "Sun Children" and a gorgeous house remix of "The Love Feeling" from SABO feat new vocals from Dario Boente.

Conceptually, Sun People was built with songs made for people who love the sun, sunshine and brighter days to come. Appropriate, of course, as Nickodemus has made his mark soundtracking NYC summers with his massively popular Turntables On The Hudson live events (More than just 4/4 beats and a night out, Nickodemus is known for adding something a bit more musical and spiritual to the mix at his parties). The original versions were inspired by various people Nickodemus met and places he's been, along with his collective feelings of optimism. It's these positive sonic vibes from all over the globe that Nickodemus matches with collaborators hailing from destinations including Guinea, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Romania, India, Turkey, United Kingdom and New York City. These are the Sun People.

Original "Sun People Remixed" Press Article on Mog.com

Nickodemus Featured on PUMA Music!

                     Nickodemus -

                     Sun Children

Nickodemus has finally unleashed his sophomore album, "SUN PEOPLE"!

J Boogie brings a wonderfully warm electronic vibe to the soothing Middle Eastern vocal on "Didibina" while Swedish producer HIRD (Fever Ray, Little Dragon) brings out a treasure trove of percussion on "La Lluvia." The warehouse doors fly open with techno on Christian Prommer's driving and beautiful remix of "The Love Feeling;" a proper warm up for Kush Arora's bone rattling 2 step crusher on "2 Sips & Magic." A comedown is necessary after that scorcher and Adham Shaikh offers the perfect R&R through his downtempo take on "WEriseWEfallWerise" Day turns to evening and the sun sets on this CD with Pablo Sanchez's smooth Hip-Hop flavored take on "Sun Children" and a gorgeous house remix of "The Love Feeling" from SABO feat new vocals from Dario Boente.

"Sun People Remixed" is released Digitally on December 16, 2009 and on CD January 19, 2010 through ESL Music

**********************************************************

"Sun People reflects a rich musicality, while infectious rhythms keep the party live. It covers a wide range of soul/afro funk, hip house, Latin and dub plus some eastern influences. Starting off is the title track with an homage to the afro sound. The vocal and instruments welcome what you are about to embark on. "Sun Children" belts out a party styled hip house groove with vocals from the Real Live Show. The melding of hip hop vocals and a up-tempo house vibe is a perfect way to get up and go. The next few tracks delve into a funky Latin soul feel with some dub influences. The energy is minimal but you can hear the vocals take over in the "Love Feeling" from Brian J from the Pimps of Joytime. From mid way some of the tracks carry a eastern vibe that is very refreshing. It would seem most of the time tracks like that have the basic elements but Nickodemus adds a certain flare that most artists don’t seem to incorporate if they are genre skipping in their productions. The magic here is the amalgamation of electronic beats and sounds that cover the full spectrum of the track even subtle background noises. It’s no wonder Nickodemus productions are fluid and tight. Ending off we get greeted to a dub style track on "N’Dini" with Ismael Kouyate belting out a conventional vocal and being accompanied by a group of horn players and a gracious helping of traditional drumming. With so many changes in the styles of music it’s good to hear Nickodemus rise above a lot of other artists to create Sun People that can be enjoyed by so many different people.

To learn more and hear the full streaming album click below!

Nu-Soul Magazine Review of "Sun People"

Genre: Soul/Nu-jazz/Afrobeat

Sun People is the sophomore release of ESL Records golden child Nickodemus. His initial release, Endangered Species introduced listeners to plethora of world sounds. Sun People is very similar, and yet in many ways, more expansive. The album incorporates a variation of Afro-Latin overtones with free-form Jazz, bombastic percussion, and colorful horns that enrich its sound. The infectious polyrhythmic efforts of each track coalesce together in a way that is quite perfect.

From the introduction of Sun Children, Nickodemus integrates the listener into a hypnotic trance. Ismael Kouyate's voice is a vibrant and uplifting presence, reminiscent of Ugandan artist Geoffrey Oryema. From there the album lifts off into a wave of melody, each track contributing it's piece to a colorful canvas of sound. La Lluvia (ft. Richard Shepherd) and Just Move (ft. MC Kwasi) are contagious tracks. Its hypnotic syncopation slaps the listener into an uncontrollable movement. One can't help but get lost in it's infectiousness.

His multidimensional perspective is translated in his love for world music. Sun People is an inclusive forum whose world influences vary from Puerto Rico, Brazil, India, the UK, and the US. Nickodemus weaves these intricate cultural themes together to effortlessly create Sun People.

The collaborative efforts of artists such as Quantic, The Candela Allstars, and Falu force the album to evolve, each track standing on it's own. Though there are moments where one might wonder how the transitions jump from one genre of sound to the next, as you allow Nickodemus to take the lead, you begin to realize that it's effect is actually deliberate. As the multitude of influences finally converge in "N'Dini”, another version of Sun People, it isn't until we reach the final track, Calinda's mix of "Dinibina” do we understand that we've come full circle.

The concoction of chromatic flavors makes Sun People a rich and organic experience. Overall, Nickodemus has created a delicious album to savor time and time again.

-Elizabeth Ubides, Courtesy of the LA Music Project

The Observer Review of "Sun People"

His debut, Endangered Species, established the New York DJ as a producer whose palette of influences extended way beyond his native city, to Puerto Rica, Jamaica and the Balkans. This second album is an even more seamless assemblage of world grooves, mixing gypsy clarinets with loping reggae rhythms and clattering salsa with Big Apple funk. Though it's an album built on a shifting matrix of grooves - the kind of thing that drives a Womad dance tent - quality vocals include the wail of Indian classical singer Falu, the reggae raps of Ticklah and the griot call of Guinea's Ismael Kouyate. A captivating mix of hot rhythm and cool atmospherics.

The Observer Review of "Sun People"

New York Press: Dance Floor Prophet

DJ Nickodemus has been spinning for Turntables on the Hudson, an annual series of outdoor dance parties on the Hudson River, for 11 years. This summer, TOTH has a party tonight at Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City, three events slated for August and one on Governors Island. Nicko put down the discs to talk with New York Press about crazy partiers swimming across the Hudson and why the East River has been left in the dust.

So this is the 11th year of Turntables on the Hudson. How has the party changed through the years?
As much as I hate to admit it, we're a lot older now. The party has changed locations and ends at 2 a.m., but we're still outdoors and still keeping it funky.

What about the party's music has kept it popular?
The music we play at the party is funky, eclectic and all-inclusive. Plus, DJs and producers keep pumping out interesting sounds, so it never gets old.

What's the craziest thing that's ever happened at a TOTH party?
Well, we plead the 5th. OK, a few times on the Hudson, people jumped in the River, but one time a guy swam across to the Jersey Side. Other than that, it's mainly just clean fun with an occasional musical surprise.

Your new CD, Sun People, came out mid-June. How's that been going?
It's exciting to hear everyone's reactions around the world. It's seemed to reach all sorts of music lovers, not just the DJ's. I love when someone like my Mom can relate to the sound as well as a dance floor in Stockholm or Barcelona.

Anything new or special surprises for this year's shows?
Yes, I'm working on the live show, which is turning out to be more of a DJ set with a few live guests, some interesting performances and visuals. Getting the band together is a real challenge in New York, but there are other creative ways to perform the music that are interesting for me and hopefully for the dance floor. Sept. 6, we'll show off a little of the new tunes live on stage on Governors Island for our 11th Anniversary.

What do you think about the current state of the NYC party scene?
I think it's busy as ever, and it's going on in smaller secret venues all the time. There's always all these trends popping up, but in general I think people are out for a good time and something different. I do wish there were more young people going out who were into underground music. We were 15 and 16 years old sneaking into hip-hop, techno and house parties back in the day. I wonder if kids these days are stuck to the TV and video games, or clubs just got way too serious about underage entries. In that case, where are the 21 year olds?

Where do you see TOTH going in the future?
As long as there's an outdoor space available to us, we'll be rocking the party! With Water Taxi Beach's presence on the NYC Waterfront, we should be in NYC at least a couple more years. After that, Europe, Brazil… It's all wide open and very inviting!

Why on the Hudson? No East River love?
We've done Turntables on the Thames, Danube, Sydney Harbor and Delaware. We like to call it the "Hudson East" River cause it branches at the top of Manhattan, but you're right. It is time we give the East River some love! What do we call the Governor's Island events, then? "The Sunday Getaway featuring Turntables on the Buttermilk Channel!"

New York Press: Dance Floor Prophet

3 hive Press Coverage of "Sun Peole"

A hot and sweaty dance floor number just in time for summer. Nickodemus has been ruling the NYC dance music scene since the mid-nineties as a resident DJ at Giant Step up until presently with his work with the Turntables on the Hudson parties. On record, his name is synonymous with sunny grooves and he can always be counted on to bring big-booty-shakin' bounces. Lately, I've been digging his work with Quantic, and his remixes of Billy Holiday, Mexican Institute of Sound, and Ocote Soul Sound. Now he's ready to drop his sophomore album, Sun People next month on Eighteenth Street Lounge music. Nickodemus touts a cornucopia of world sounds collaborating with artists from all corners of the globe including Mandingo vocalist Ismael Kouyate and New York's Real Live Show. Nickodemus is to music as Tajín is to mango. That album contained all of that ponytailed hipster world music pretentiousness TC is best known for but instead of sucking, Nickodemus made the sh*t rock and subsequently created a new genre I like to call klezmer funk. His latest Sun People is a summertime themed update of the klezmer funk he explored back in the oh-six even bringing back some of the previous album's cast of characters including producers Quantic and Zeb for a familiar feel. But that is where comparisons end as Sun People spends a great deal of time exploring latin and African rhythms ala J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science, whose 2008 album Soul Vibrations, Nickodemus owes some sort of debt to in terms of influence. The production here is unbelievable, tunes are actual songs with catchy hooks, and it still manages to be funky as a mofo. It's hard not to smile everytime I hear this album, for me this album will always be inextricable linked to summertime-and who ever said that was a bad thing?

Vinyl Junkie Review of "Sun People"

Electronic Musician features Nickodemus

NICKODEMUS: SUN PEOPLE (WONDERWHEEL RECORDINGS)

New York DJ Nickodemus' second solo CD offers 12 cuts of effusive and eclectic world-beat dance music. He went from being a regular DJ in the early days of Giant Step, to running one of NYC's longest running parties called Turntables on the Hudson, Nickodemus has been a steady force on the music scene for over 12 Years. In light of the release of his second solo album entitled Sun People, we felt this was a good time to chat with him in regards to his parties, the album, and much more....

In what ways do you feel being from Brooklyn has affected your music career?

Wow... Brooklyn is so dynamic, yet peaceful enough to actually get work done. Most of my friends who are musicians live in Brooklyn as well so hopping around recording & meeting up with A-class musicians from all musical genres is a lot easier than most places!

What types of music were you exposed to growing up?

As a youth, mostly Soul, R&B, and the Afro-Latin soul sounds of Earth Wind & Fire, Santana, Manu Dibango and anything else my parents managed to get from our main radio stations 107.5 WBLS & 98.7 Kiss FM. I followed up as a teenager listening to the same stations as they programmed Hip-Hop on the weekends. Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Kid Capri, Mr. Magic & Marly Marl really influenced me as a dj! Then by the time I was 18, the Acid Jazz & Giant Step sound really captured my ears... it was like coming full circle for me musically.

What is the main concept of the Turntables On The Hudson events?

The main concept was & always will be good music, good people, good locations & no attitude! If we can score a nice outdoor venue actually ON the Hudson River, it's a bonus, but it's not even necessary. Mariano, Nappy G, Christian Rogers & our whole extended family of musicians, artists, DJ's, dancers can make a party happen even on the crummy F train morning commute.

Turntables On The Hudson celebrated their 10th anniversary last year, what factors do you believe made this project so successful?

All different elements that I mentioned before plus some real endurance to deal with all the behind the scenes things like club owners, city cabaret laws in the late nineties & early 2000's, closure of spaces, nasty weather etc. But we're survivors... I'm from NYC, Mariano's from Napoli, Nappy G's from the school of hardknocks, so it'll take a lot to stop this groove!

How would you describe the local scene in New York?

The local scene in NY is really diverse, but I feel people tend to stick to their clicks a lot. I feel like there's less all inclusive parties out there that make everyone feel comfortable regardless of your style, dance moves, amount of money in your pocket. Party people in NY have seen so many good things come & go, so when they find something good; they try to protect it & own it. It becomes very insular. I see their point because no one appreciates what can happen to certain places & parties due to an excess amount of people who could care less about the music, but this attitude can have some negative side to it as well. I guess this is what keeps the local scene so dynamic... we have to form, reform, move & keep the groove all the time!

Do you have any enjoyable experiences that you would like to share with us in regards to events where you have recently performed?

Absolutely!! Just yesterday the weather reports were calling for "severe" weather including, thunderstorms, flooding, hail etc. To our amazement, people still came all the way out to Governors Island to the party. The weather reports are so sensational & rarely correct, but this time they were right! Well, Maracatu Brazilian Drum Troupe played their hearts out while we witnessed a storm cloud over the city, sunshine & hail rain over Governors Island & a huge arching rainbow over Brooklyn. Needless to say people were dancing, taking pictures & smiling! It was so refreshing!I loved to see parents with their kids dancing in the rain & teaching them not to be afraid of it! Que Linda La Lluvia!

Is your second album Sun People that was released last month doing well rating wise?

Sure, people can see my genuine effort & feeling behind this album... It wasn't some fabricated album concocted in a think tank up in some midtown major label with a pretty girl on the cover. I think people are getting tired of the BS & want real things again.... real food, real information, real music...

How did you arrange the collaborations with other artists on Sun People?

Since I finished my first album "Endangered Species," I've been recording musicians on the road in my tours, writing lyrics & concepts on the plane or wherever I got the inspiration. Other than people I met along the road, most of the collaborations are friends & family that I like to work with... we all trust each other & support each other's efforts to keep doing what we love.

What stage of progress is the release of your follow up entitled Moon People currently in?

I want this album to be the deeper nighttime side of "Sun People." "Moon People" will be for all the disco dancers, romantics, and moon chasers...

When can we expect Moon People to be released?

I want to have this ready for the first full moon of this winter.

Which DJ's might we expect to be supporting some of your recent productions?

Quantic, Mr Scruff, Tal M Klein, Wiseacre, J-Boogie, King Britt, Senor Lobo, Jeannie Hopper, DJ Vadim, Tom B, La Chusma all have their favorites & I'm honored!

What separates your style from other artists?

I don't know- I guess all my experiences that make me ME. Making art is like all these intricate pieces of one's life puzzle that somehow fit into the finished picture... or maybe a portion of the picture that's an ongoing mural?

What else can we expect from you this year?

I'm producing some big events on Governors Island to bring more good music & good times to everyone who's willing to break out of the city. Then, after September, I'm getting back in the studio & working on an album that will help support awareness & financials to the NEXT AID Organization. They are a grassroots organization that helps orphaned children from Aids in South Africa. It'll be a good mix of sounds from NYC & Africa! www.nextaid.org is the website & we hope to have something ready for the World Cup in SA 2010.

Keep Twisting!

365Mag would like to thank Nickodemus for his time and answers!

365 INTERVIEW with Nickodemus

An Afrofunke Affair! He gave us a warm Afrofunke welcome and told us all about how excited he was to have Nickodemus in town.

"Nico, he's like a prophet of the sound," Rocky shared. "When Jeremy (Sole, of KCRW fame and resident Afrofunke DJ extraordinaire) would play, I would be like, ‘What's that track?' He'd say...'That's Nickodemus.' It happened so many times that it was ridiculous. I've been a fan of what he stands for and what he's trying to use the music to do and feel that he's an equally important piece in the cultural revolution [5]."

With his now infamous Turntables On The Hudson parties and albums, Nickodemus has had his finger on the pulse of the cultural revolution for sometime. On "Sun People," his recently released sophomore album for Thievery Corporation's ESL Records [6], he has crafted a cohesive body of work that effortlessly covers all genres, from Latin and Jamaican rhythms, Indian and Middle-Eastern influences and of course the standout, sun-drenched funk of "Sun Children," which is the essential jam of the summer season for us so far.

"You're always yearning for the sun to come out and the seasons to change," Nico told us before the show. "Everywhere I go, people are always amped up by the sun, so it's a combination of being in New York and traveling to all these different areas of the world. I just wanted to make a really nice, sun-inspired, get outside and dance kind of album."

After getting extensive spins on the road and at home, we can certainly attest that it does indeed get you moving and grooving from start to finish. "It's really about breaking down any sort of boundaries, a real mash-up of sound," Nico explained. "Sun People is just that, it's all about inspiration and coming out of the darkness and into the sun."

When he took to the decks for the packed house, he set forth on a musical adventure for all of his "Sun Children," making sure to drop some exclusive re-edits and surprises in the process. The first came with his lovingly retouched version of the late King of Pop's underrated gem, "Off The Wall," which really elevated the crowd to new levels. The next was the true highlight of the evening, where at approximately 1:00am, a live percussion band that Nico had arranged to march through the crowd with a full-scale drum-circle-style workout. While the place was so packed that they couldn't exactly march, we all surrounded them and with our energy combined, we sent shock-waves through the streets of Santa Monica, long into the night.

"We're riding the wheels of change and we're bringing energy that not only belongs here but belongs everywhere," Rocky told us. "Once people feel that, they can go out there (in the world) and shine their light brighter because they will be energized and feel that, ‘You know what, I'm not alone, this is a movement, here we are and we are really feeling it'."

Truer words were never spoken.

Don't forget to check out more pictures of this fantastic night here and download below our exclusive new Nickodemus track, "Didibini," co-produced with the uber-talented, Quantic!
Nat Geo Music Asks Globetrotting International DJ Nickodemus About The Sun People
                  by Derek Beres
It's been eleven years since Brooklyn-based DJ/producer Nickodemus co-founded the Turntables on the Hudson party on the fringe of Manhattan's Westside Highway. Now based on the East River in Queens, NY the party rages on weekly, while the host travels the planet in the constant quest of finding, and then presenting the best global, funky, and bass-laden beats.

After the success of his two previous releases on the ESL Music label, Endangered Species and Endangered Species Remixed, Nickodemus took his time crafting his latest foray into worldwide beatmaking, Sun People. Incorporating Balkan, Puerto Rican, Indian, African, Brazilian, and Jamaican sounds into one continuous barrage of bottom-heavy rhythms, it is easily one of the most danceable albums of 2009. Featuring an impressive roster of guests-including Quantic (with whom he created the iTunes commercial smash, "Mi Swing Es Tropical"), Brian Jay of the Pimps of Joytime, the NY Gyspy All-Stars, the Real Live Show, and Liliana Araujo-Nickodemus stays true to his roots, which at heart are communal. Only his community happens to be borderless, expressed through beats and dancing.

National Geographic: Who are the Sun People?

Nickodemus: Living in New York, you get really amped when the sun comes out, especially after this winter, which was really cold-you know, that whole idea of coming into brighter days. My main inspiration, personally and from what I noticed with a lot of people everywhere, was Obama being elected president. I saw the whole country coming out of the darkness, as well as the way we are viewed in the world. A lot of the songs were inspired by the sun as well. The lyrics are about upliftment, things like: I've been here, now I'm going to be there.

You are someone who actually travels to all the countries you borrow and play music from. Have you noticed an actual, palpable change in people's attitudes towards America?

I'm someone who, when I travel, people generally open up to and discuss political and social ideas with. Perhaps it's because I don't particularly look American, and because I speak other languages. I'm also in places where Americans don't really visit. I get to hear what people are thinking, without apologies, good or bad. And I heard a big shift in attitudes around the time when Obama became president. That gave a clear impression that America is part of the world again. Right now it doesn't seem like that much is changing, though the subtle things are important. Maybe that will transform the larger issues over time.

What changed in your approach to making music between Endangered Species and Sun People?

If you line them up one next to one another, you wouldn't notice much of a difference. I love the organic nature of the production; I don't use presets or stock sounds. Sonically they are similar. Personally, my guidance towards a lot of the artists I collaborate with changed. I gave them more instruction, predominantly to be uplifting. I kept asking: how can we capture this moment in time? I didn't give this sort of direction on Endangered Species. Not everything is political either. It's more of a mood I'm trying to get across. I wanted more of continuity in the music than last time. Each song was a chapter within a novel, instead of just putting a few tracks together and calling it an album.

On Endangered Species, a few of the songs were older, making it feel like a compilation to those following your work. With Sun People, especially with the Balkan songs, there is a fuller sound, more like a full band playing than a producer with a beat adding elements.

This is the most focused I've ever been working on an album. With the last one, I had the concept for five years before it was released. With this one, I really zoned in. I've been getting parts as I've been traveling, recording musicians in Romania, New Zealand, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Colombia. I collected them for a while, and then spent two solid weeks without leaving my studio, only working on this record. It felt good to allow myself the opportunity to do that. I never gave myself the chance to just focus on more than one song at a time.

The list of collaborators on Sun People is impressive. How did you end up recording Taraf de Haïdouks?

I've been after them for a while. I've done a couple of gigs in Romania. I wasn't able to record them there, but then I saw that we were performing at the same festival in New Zealand. When I arrived, I explained my situation, and told them how much I appreciate their music. It would have been hard to get everybody in on the recording, so I asked one of the elders who would be the best to record with. I wound up getting Roberto [Gheorghe] and Costel. They are like peanut butter and jelly together; they do everything together. We shut up in the hotel and went for it. I played them some beats and they jumped on them. The main Balkan tune, "Brookarest," is their feature song. I have one more that's unreleased, with the older accordion player, Marius [Marin Manole], that's just brilliant. I'm going to release that later on.

And then there's the toaster, Kwasi?

Kwasi is an emcee from Manchester. He's the voice of Manchester. He's been emceeing for over twenty years. He came out to emcee a bunch of our parties in New York, and he stayed at my place. He's old school; there's no pre-formed thought to his lyrics. He just gets to the mic and freestyles. I barely did any editing.

You also keep things local. Richard Shepherd, of the now-defunct Radio Mundial, appears on "La Lluvia."

I ran into Richard right around here, near Park Slope, Brooklyn and told him about the concept of the album, being inspired by the sun and all that. Well he comes into the studio with a song called "The Rain" (laughs). Lyrically, he talked about how beautiful the rain is, how it washes away his pains, which is the same sort of concept, so it works: getting over things and coming into more positive times.

And the two tracks with Ismael Kouyate, which bookend the album, are both quite positive and upbeat...

I came across him with the Mandingo Ambassadors playing at Barbes, again right around the corner from here. I really loved them, and he was down to record. I'm recording with the entire band. Ismael is a natural.

With the depth and breadth of music on this album, we can think of Bucovina Club founder Shantel, who took his Balkan beats live on the road. Do you ever planning on creating a live band?
That's the next thing: the Sun People band. It's so hard to do it in New York. I already have three festival gigs lined up, and I don't even have all the players lined up yet. In an ideal world, I'd have the NY Gypsy All-Stars meets Brazilian batacuda meets the Real Live Show and Ismael Kouyate. It would be twenty people, at least.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; made on the big city scene. The Brooklyn-based artist has performed alongside a decade's worth of the scene's finest international talent and soundtracked the summers with his massively popular 'Turntables On The Hudson' live events. More than just 4/4 beats and a night out, Nickodemus is known for adding something a bit more musical and spiritual to the mix. There's real culture and social themes incorporated into Nickodemus' music. With the weather warming up timing could not be better for the release of Nickodemus' sophomore artist CD, the aptly titled 'Sun People' (released June 16 on Wonderwheel Recordings and Thievery Corporations ESL Music). READ FULL STORY....

Conceptually, 'Sun People' was built with songs made for people who love the sun, sunshine and brighter days to come. Songs were inspired by various people Nickodemus met and places he's been, along with his collective feelings of optimism. "Sun People makes the best of every situation. When that sun peaks out in the sky, it's another day to feel and do something positive" Nickodemus says.

'Sun People' mixes positive sonic vibes from all over the globe with collaborators hailing from destinations including Guinea, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Romania, India, Turkey, United Kingdom and New York City. Recording artists The Real Live Show guests on the uplifting Hip-Hop jam "Sun Children" while Quantic lends his unmistakable groove on the Salsa Ritmo of "La Lluvia." Not to be outdone, Brazilian songstress Liliana Araujo features on the hot samba of "Gira Do Sol" while Mandingo vocalist Ismael Kouyate lends his Afro-beat groove to "N'Dini." Packed with brilliant collaborations, 'Sun People' is a pan-continental party not to be missed! Please see below for Nickodemus' own track-by-track synopsis.

Nickodemus honed his skill as resident DJ for Giant Step-produced (NYC) functions from 1995 – 1999 where he provided support DJ sets for live concerts from Gil Scott Heron, Jazzmattazz, The Pharcyde, Mos Def & Kweli, KRS-One, Us 3, Thievery Corporation, Groove Collective, Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers, Angelique Kidjo and Femi Kuti. In 1998, Nickodemus became resident DJ and producer for Turntables On The Hudson (TOTH) - one of the first late night outdoor events in NYC. The party became an adventurous, young, free-spirited community known for its eclectic musical blend of Hip-Hop, funk, house and soul played back to back with Latin, Afrobeat and Eastern European gypsy sounds. After ten years, the TOTH parties are now taking place every Friday at the Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City, Queens overlooking Manhattan and the East River.

For more information contact Caroline Hoste.

VIDEO: "Sun Children" Video by Nickodemus

Sun Children by Nickodemus feat The Real Live Show was shot at the Sundae Party in Philadelphia by Craig Carpenter (Director of Photography), Kelly G.
